During Christmas on Main Street Dec. 6, the Optimist Club of Azle will host a bicycle giveaway from 3-4 p.m. at 404 Main Place. This year a total of 120 bikes will be raffled off, ranging in size from 10-inches to 27-inches, with 10 bikes per size in both boys’ and girls’ styles.
The Optimist Club of Azle has been doing its bicycle giveaway since 2017. After the Lions Club removed bicycles from its Angel Tree program in order to serve more children, the Optimists stepped in to continue the tradition. With member Kim Ware leading the effort, the club created a program to ensure that children still experience the joy of receiving a bike every holiday season.
“We are attempting to provide bikes to those children whose parents cannot afford to provide it, so each kid has the youthful experience to enjoy riding their bikes outside with their friends,” Optimist Club of Azle Secretary/Treasurer Paul Crabtree said. “Some may even be using it to go to and from their part time jobs.”
