A former hot topic of discussion amidst the Azle City Council has returned, as city leaders revisited the possibility of constructing a new Azle Animal Shelter and fleet maintenance facility during its Nov. 4 meeting.
City leaders came under fire this past summer when many residents voiced opposition to the council’s proposal of an $11 million budget request to fund a new animal shelter — a decision that would’ve also raised the property tax rate in the city by about 9.88%. However, the council settled on a smaller increase and decided against taking on new debt.
While the topic of the new animal shelter was put on hold so the council could revisit the discussion at a later point, Police Chief Ben Hall told council they never had the chance to hear from an architect company — someone who specializes in building new animal shelters and maintenance facilities.
