Assistant wrestling coach Michael Mitchell sings the National Anthem.

Long before the first whistle sounds at an Azle wrestling meet, assistant coach Michael Mitchell sets the tone in a different way — by singing the national anthem.

Mitchell, who has been part of the Azle community for the past year-and-a-half, performs the anthem at every home wrestling event and regularly at district, regional, state duals and UIL State wrestling competitions. His performances have become a familiar and meaningful tradition for Hornet wrestlers, families and fans.

Mitchell is married to Christina Mitchell, a substitute teacher at Azle High School, and the couple has a son who attends kindergarten at Walnut Creek Elementary. In addition to coaching both the Azle girls and boys wrestling programs, Mitchell teaches special education, including biology and environmental systems.
