If you’ve heard the rumors, it’s no baloney — Jersey Mike’s Subs is officially coming to Azle.
David Hawkins, the city’s director of planning and development, confirmed to The Azle News Jan. 23 that the popular sandwich chain has pulled permits for a commercial remodel at 605 Northwest Parkway, Suite 4 in what locals refer to as “the old Diamond shopping center” between Speer Avenue and Northwest Parkway.
“That location offers several advantages, including strong neighboring retailers that already draw traffic, ample parking and close proximity to the highway,” Hawkins said in an emailed statement. “It’s a convenient and visible spot for customers, and Jersey Mike’s will complement the existing businesses in the center, which is a win for both shoppers and retailers.”
According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, the $350,000 project involves the interior renovation of a 1,698-square-foot inline retail space. The remodel will include new kitchen equipment, interior walls, mechanical, electrical and plumbing work, and finishes.
Hawkins explained that anytime a vacant retail space is filled with a new tenant or business, it’s a positive sign for Azle’s economy — and Jersey Mike’s upcoming arrival is no different.
“It means new jobs, increased foot traffic for neighboring businesses and continued investment in the community,” Hawkins said. “Jersey Mike’s is the kind of retailer communities are excited to welcome because it comes with a built-in customer base. People actively seek out the nearest location to where they live or work, and we’re glad Azle will now be one of those options.”
While the city’s economic development team has been recruiting for a Jersey Mike’s to come to Azle for several years, Hawkins said he’s glad to know the city’s efforts have finally paid off.
“The property owner at this location has been very proactive in marketing the space to find a great tenant,” he said. “We’re excited to welcome Jersey Mike’s as a new retailer in Azle and see this as a positive step as we continue to attract additional businesses to the community. Each new retailer helps build momentum, and we look forward to what else may follow as Azle continues to grow.”
With construction set to begin March 16 and a target completion date of June 15, it’s clear Azleites will soon have more than one new dining option besides Chick-fil-A — giving locals the chance to not only “Eat Mor Chikin,” but enjoy it “Mike’s Way,” too.
