The Azle boys and girls basketball teams split a pair of District 5-5A games last week, highlighted by a dramatic road win and a thrilling comeback at home.
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, the Hornets traveled across the lake to face Chisholm Trail and came away with a 37-36 victory in dramatic fashion. Junior Cason Cook capped the night by draining a floater at the buzzer to lift Azle past the Rangers. Earlier in the game, Cook reached the 1,000-point milestone for his varsity career.
“Coach had me and Bryce come off staggered screens,” Cook said. “They didn’t guard the ball screen right, I came off the screen and found my little floater.”
The threat of inclement weather pushed Friday’s scheduled home games up to Thursday, Jan. 22, as Azle hosted Fossil Ridge in a district doubleheader.
The Lady Hornets delivered the highlight of the night, rallying for a thrilling 42-41 comeback win over the Lady Rangers. Sophomore Angel Sifuentes led Azle with 19 points, providing a spark from the perimeter as the Lady Hornets erased the deficit late.
In the boys’ game, Fossil Ridge pulled away down the stretch to defeat Azle 48-40. The loss dropped the Hornets to 4-2 in District 5-5A play and 16-11 overall.
Azle basketball returns to action this week with a home matchup against Saginaw before traveling to Granbury Friday, Jan. 30.
