Registered sex offenders can currently live anywhere they want in the city of Azle — including across the street from a school or directly next door to a daycare — but officials are now contemplating making a change.

During an Azle City Council meeting Jan. 20, Police Chief Ben Hall explained the importance of Azle implementing a sex offenders’ ordinance and what exactly it would entail.

“If you’re registered as a sex offender, you would require them to be a certain designated distance from what are considered child safety zones,” Hall said. “Essentially, it’s any place children gather or congregate, like in the schools and public parks. What it does is it establishes a 1,000-foot limit and within that area, the registered sex offender cannot reside there because it’s too close and within that distance.”
