Azle wrestling delivered a championship weekend on the mats, sweeping both the boys and girls District 4-5A team titles and sending a combined 25 wrestlers on to the regional tournament.
The state-ranked Azle Hornet boys captured the district championship Friday, Jan. 30, edging Arlington Heights 281–278.5 in a dramatic finish that wasn’t decided until the final bout of the night. Heavyweight Jordan Durrett sealed the title with a thrilling come-from-behind victory, sparking celebrations for Azle’s fourth district championship in five years.
The Hornets’ team title was powered by six individual champions. Chase Yancy earned district gold and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Also claiming district championships for Azle were Tyler Yancy, Cameron Latham, Mark O’Neil and Wyatt Hicks. In all, 12 of Azle’s 14 wrestlers qualified for the regional tournament.
