For the first time in school history, Azle High School wrestling swept the regional championships, as both the Hornets and Lady Hornets claimed Region 1 Class 5A team titles in a historic showing on the mats.
The Azle boys totaled 165 team points to outdistance Lubbock High with 145 points and Amarillo Caprock with 144.5 points, powered by standout performances from the Yancey brothers. Senior Chase Yancey, competing at 144 pounds with a 52-1 record on the season, captured the regional championship, while younger brother Tyler Yancey, 53-1 for the season, claimed the 138-pound title. The win marked Tyler Yancey’s second consecutive regional championship.
Cameron Latham added a runner-up finish at 132 pounds, while Wyatt Hicks, at 150 pounds, and Jordan Durrett at 285 pounds, each placed third. Mark O’Neil finished sixth at 113 pounds, Kolby Morgan placed fifth at 120 pounds, and Tyler Hicks earned sixth at 157 pounds to round out the scoring for the Hornets.
