The Civil Air Patrol, Azle Composite Squadron sounded the bugle call with an invitation for future cadets to join the local chapter during its open house Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Dozens of prospective candidates and their families gathered at Cornerstone Community Church for its biannual open house, where young leaders took the reins to speak about the CAP program.

The youth leadership program is a U.S. Air Force civilian auxiliary branch open to youth ages 12-21 where participants gain character building, leadership and development skills via a three-tier phase system — airman, non-commissioned officer and officer. During each phase, cadets move through the ranks, testing in aviation, aerospace and physical fitness every 58 days before promoting to the next phase. Prior to this, cadets must also go to encampment — a week-long “bootcamp” style training camp where they drill, PT and begin learning the fundamentals of discipline and leadership.
