Azle City Council members received a large helping of information Feb. 3, when Community and Marketing Specialist Kristen Pegues announced the city will need to update its food truck ordinance within the next few months.

“I think we've all heard of House Bill 2844 that passed last summer,” Pegues said. “It’s known as the Food Truck Freedom Act. Basically, the state has taken over a lot of regulations when dealing with food trucks, so no matter what, our food truck ordinance will have to change to come into compliance.”

According to Pegues, HB 2844 — which was signed into law in 2025 — will create a single, statewide health permit for food trucks, eliminating the need for separate permits in each city or county. Once it goes into effect July 1, Pegues said this legislation will essentially limit how much cities and counties can regulate food trucks.
