Azle Hornet senior Bryce Robinson knocks down this 3-ball against Chisholm Trail.

The Azle boys basketball season came to a close Friday night in a tense playoff play-in game after a complicated District 5-5A tiebreaker scenario sent the Hornets into a winner-take-all matchup.

Azle, Saginaw and Chisholm Trail finished district play tied for the third and fourth playoff positions. Under district rules, a coin flip was used to determine the third-place team. Saginaw was selected as the odd team out in the three-way flip and awarded the district’s third playoff spot, leaving Azle and Chisholm Trail to battle for the fourth and final postseason berth.

The play-in game was held Friday, Feb. 20, at Brewer High School, with a packed gym split between Hornets and Rangers fans. Aledo entered the postseason as the District 5-5A champion, while Brewer finished second.
