The normally near-vacant council chambers at Pelican Bay City Hall was nearly filled to capacity Feb. 10 as residents showed up in droves to protest the approval of a special use permit to convert a residence at 1441 Yacht Club Drive into a six-resident assisted living facility.

While the agenda item was initially approved 5-1, the hour-and-a-half discussion leading up to the vote included many heated exchanges, warnings from Mayor Tamra Olague about maintaining decorum and even occasional profanity from the audience.
