SOCCER
The Lady Hornet varsity soccer team shut out Fossil Ridge Tuesday, Feb. 24 with a score of 3-0. Scoring for the Lady Hornets were Kimberly Licero, Addison Horner and Madison Hicks.
The Lady Hornet JV soccer also defeated Fossil Ridge 3-1. Scoring for the JV Lady Hornets was Dania Sandoval with two goals, while the third goal was an own goal.
The Azle Boys Varsity Soccer squad traveled to Fossil Ridge and battled to a 3-1 victory. Preston Baucom, Jacob Loza, Miguel Maldonado each scored for the Hornets.
On Friday, Feb. 27, the Lady Hornets varsity continued district play by hosting Saginaw at Hornet Stadium. The Lady Hornets shut out the Lady Roughriders 4-0. Lily Hudman, Addison Horner, Preslie Murrell and Yasmeen Tejeda each scored for the Lady Hornets. Goalkeeper Emma Nelson gets another shut out.
The Lady Hornet JV soccer team also defeated Saginaw Friday, Feb. 27 by a score of 2-0. Dania Sandoval and Luisa Rodarte scored for the Lady Hornets.
The Azle Boys varsity soccer lost a tough game on the road at Saginaw as the Roughriders roughed up the Hornets 5-0.
SOFTBALL
The Lady Hornet varsity softball team played in the Turf Wars Softball tournament from Thursday, Feb. 26 to Saturday, Feb. 28. The Lady Hornets played four very good opponents in the tournament, gaining valuable experience for the district run. The Lady Hornets opened with Walnut Grove and played to a 1-1 tie. Next the Lady Hornets faced College Station, Hebron and Southlake Carroll taking a loss in the very tough Turf Wars tourney.
BASEBALL
The Hornet varsity baseball team won first place in the Kennedale Tournament with a perfect 5-0 record on the weekend. The tournament was Thursday-Saturday Feb. 26-28. The Hornets defeated Bryan Adams 12-2. Jackson Hefley picked up the win going five innings, giving up two hits and two runs with six Ks. Garin Bissonnette, Mason Holleman and Reece Denham had three hits each. In game 2 of the tournament the Azle Hornets took down Dallas Kimball in a shut out, 11-0. Henry Rosales had two hits including a home run and Mason Holleman had five RBIs on two hits. Martin Balderas picked up the win on the mound with a one-hit shutout. In a very tense match-up with the home team the Hornets beat Kennedale 4-0. Starting pitcher Aden Laker gave up no hits and reliever Nolan Meitz picked up the save. The Hornets continued their winning ways, taking down South Oak Cliff 8-0. Tyler Hicks led the Hornets with three hits. In the final game of the tournament the Hornets handled Castleberry 13-1. Henry Rolases had two hits including a home run. Mason Holleman added four RBIs
The Azle Hornet JV Green team went 3-1 in its tournament at Fossil Ridge. Aiden Parong had a great tournament on the mound and at the plate.
Azle Hornet JV White also went 3-1 in its tournament in Aledo. Drewey Whitaker, Parker Hullum, Korbyn Braswell, Kolton Braswell and Eli Meitz all pitched well and Meitz added a home run.
TRACK AND FIELD
The Azle Lady Hornet Track and Field squad went to the Peaster relays Thursday, Feb. 26 and Lady Hornet freshman Jazmin Neri placed first in the 1,600-meter run setting another school record at 5:11.83. Neri also won the 3,200-meter run. Nicole Johnson placed first in the 100-meter dash. Yasmeen Tejeda was third in the 800 and Reese Jeter was fourth. Addison Van Hooser took third in the high jump. In the triple jump, Cameron Short finished second and Tatyanna Gibson was second in the shot put. Charli Hanson and Abigail Balderas finished third and fourth respectively in the discus.
The Hornet track squad competed at the Peaster relays Thursday, Feb. 26. Jacob Montelongo won the 200-meter dash. In the 800, Emery Trammell placed first. Brayden Combs won the triple jump with a 40-foot, 6-inch in jump. In the 4X100 relay the Azle squad finished second and also finished second in the 4X200 relay. Jose Romero was third in the 1,600 meter run and Paul Robinson was second in the 3,200 meters.
Golf
The Azle girls varsity golf team played in a two-day golf tournament Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28. On Friday, the girls teed up at Split Rail for the first 18 and Saturday the Ladies played Squaw Creek. Senior Brooklyn Sharp led the Lady Hornets with a two-day total of 201. Junior Cailyn Coleman carded a 207 over the two days. Junior Taylor Merrill posted 219 while fellow junior Haleigh Ann House carded a 225. Senior Dakota Donaldson had a 231 and sophomore Cali Smith posted 235.
The Hornet boys varsity golfers played in the same tournament as the girls on opposite courses. The boys started their first 18 at Squaw Creek, Friday, Feb. 27. The Hornets next played Split Rail to conclude the 36-hole tournament. Junior Knox Remley led all Hornets with a two-day total of 168. Senior Tyler Diffie posted 171, junior Grayson Blair shot 173, senior Derrek Vowell carded 187 and Jackson Brady came in with a 212.
