On the heels of Azle Independent School District canceling its May general election, the city of Azle followed suit with its own cancelation during a regular Azle City Council meeting March 3.
As the filing deadlines have passed for both candidate placement on the ballot and the declaration of write-in candidacy, City Secretary Yael Hoffman certified in writing that each candidate on the ballot is unopposed.
According to Chapter 2-C of the Texas Election Code, a governing body is authorized to declare each unopposed candidate elected to office and cancel the general election. With no challengers running for office, this means that three incumbent council members — Place 1 Derrick Nelson, Place 2 Amy Estes and Place 5 Rouel Rothenberger Jr. — will be reelected to their respective positions.
