The Azle Independent School District could be facing a revenue loss in the form of millions of dollars within the next couple of years — a move that’s contingent on how property values will be assessed in the future.

During the AISD board of trustees meeting Feb. 23, Superintendent Todd Smith announced the district had recently failed the 2025 property value study that was conducted by the state comptroller’s office.

According to the state comptroller website, the purpose of the School District Property Value Study is to help ensure equitable distribution of state funding for public education. Government Code Section 403.302 requires the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts to conduct a study to determine the total taxable value of all property in each school district at least once every two years. The commissioner of education then uses the school district PVS results to ensure equitable distribution of education funds so that school districts have roughly the same number of dollars to spend per student — regardless of the school district’s property wealth.
