Rex Ballauer grew up in Azle and graduated from Azle High School in 1963. She left Azle in 1965 after she got married and earned a bachelor's degree in early childhood education from the University of North Texas in 1967.

After college she and her husband — a high school football coach — moved around North Texas frequently. She taught first grade for a bit and second grade for 25 years. She taught for one year at Eagle Heights Elementary and at Eagle Mountain Saginaw School District for several years. She and her husband moved back to Azle in 1998 and both retired from teaching in 2001.

After moving back to Azle, Ballauer became a member of the Azle Historical Museum and has served as president of the organization since August 2004. She is responsible for the organization and scheduling of the museum. As the president, she proudly considers herself Azle’s unofficial historian.
