Pelican Bay residents will start to see some new technology making its way to up-and-coming developments after city council members voted unanimously April 13 to convert 10 mechanical water meters to electronic auto-read meters.

The discussion first began during the March 10 Pelican Bay City Council meeting following the final plat approval for the Pine Cone Meadows subdivision the month prior.

“This is a discussion on pricing and upgrading the meters in the city,” Mayor Tamra Olague told council last month. “The reason I’m bringing this to you now is because we have a development that’s going to go in and part of that development is the permitting fees, and part of the permitting fees are the meters that they are going to use … We currently use mechanical meters … and we’re trying to get them all switched out, because they need to be switched out anyway.”
