Pelican Bay is hitting the brakes on unreliable vehicles, with officials already starting the process to replace the city’s aging police and animal control fleet.

Brad Anderson, chief of police for Pelican Bay, told council members April 14 the city’s fleet is “in sad shape,” — adding how the “poor fleet” was already a concern when he first came to the area four years ago.

“We were hoping to get a little further out with these (vehicles), but they are almost 10 years old, and they were used when they were purchased,” Anderson explained during the meeting. “They have just completely fallen apart. We have one that is completely out — it’s done. We have another that is on its way any day now. We’re spending thousands and thousands of dollars in addition to the back and forth on the unreliability of the safety issues, so it’s just gotten to the point where we have no other option but to come before you all to try to fix the problem.”
