Azle Independent School District fifth and sixth grade gifted and talented students from Azle Elementary and Hoover Elementary stepped into the spotlight at the ISD Administration Building during the biennial Hornet’s Nest event May 14. At the event, students pitched original ideas in a “Shark Tank”-style showcase where they presented to local business leaders serving as “Hornets.”
The event brought together students, staff and community members to celebrate the creativity and problem-solving skills students developed over the year-long mind and body unit. Students began working on their projects in August and first learned about the body — specifically, how the body moves and how the body functions — before learning about the brain and its role in everyday life. The event gave students the opportunity to showcase their projects, months of research, collaboration and prototype development.
“This is really just how we showcase our kids. This is, again, that culminating activity, where it shows off our kids' creativity, shows off all their special gifts they have, and shows off all they can do. It goes far beyond the classroom, where they've partnered with community members, they've partnered with engineers, and they've partnered with Tinkercad (a 3D design and modeling tool) to develop this. So that's how this kind of all comes together in this cute little bow,” Azle Elementary GT Feeder Pattern teacher Breanna Reed told The Azle News.
