Throughout the month of May, Azle ISD Gifted and Talented elementary students showcased their creativity with recycled materials through cardboard arcade games they designed and built during the spring semester. Students in first through fourth grade at each elementary campus participated in the project, with arcade demonstrations held across the district.

Walnut Creek Elementary and Hilltop Elementary were the first campuses to present their cardboard arcades May 4, followed by Liberty Elementary May 5. The showcase concluded during the final week of school with Eagle Heights May 18, Cross Timbers Elementary May 19, and Silver Creek Elementary May 20.

Students began building the foundation for the project at the beginning of the year with their yearlong Mind and Body unit. As the focus of the unit shifted toward the study of the mind, psychology and human behavior, students explored concepts such as brain function, attention, motivation and reaction time. As they did so, they became fascinated by how games are intentionally designed to keep players engaged.
