Nearly 27 years ago, Susie Hiles began her career with the city of Azle never imagining she would one day help oversee the city’s daily operations as assistant to the city manager. Now, after nearly three decades of service to the community, Hiles is preparing to close that chapter in her life with a retirement reception from 2-6 p.m. Friday, June 12 at City Hall.
Hiles was born in Fort Worth and grew up near the Keller and North Richland Hills area in the small community of Smithfield, close to her grandparents. Her early years were spent at Keller ISD schools including Keller Elementary, and she spent time in Louisiana during junior high. After her parents divorced, she moved with her father and stepmother to the Texas Christian University area where she attended and graduated from Paschal High School in 1977.
She originally moved with her husband, Mark, and their daughter Shanda to Azle to be closer to friends who had already settled near the area. She knew little about the community beyond that it was a place to visit with friends. But over time, Azle became more than just a place to live — it became the community where she would spend nearly three decades of her life, building a career in city government and serving the community.
