Properties damaged in the April 25 EF1 tornado and storm may qualify for a temporary property tax exemption, according to a news release from the Texas Comptroller’s office.

Tax Code Section 11.35, Temporary Exemption for Qualified Property Damaged by Disaster, allows qualified properties that are at least 15% damaged by a disaster in counties included in a disaster declaration to receive a temporary exemption on a portion of the property’s appraised value.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration that included Parker, Wise and Lamar counties April 27 following the storms that ravaged the Springtown and Azle areas April 25. Abbott amended that declaration to include Palo Pinto County May 2 after significant damage occurred there in a separate storm just days later.
