The Azle Arts Association’s annual melodrama returned with the Popcorn Players’ opening-night performance of “Evil Doings in Queen Toot’s Tomb” July 17.
The melodrama mixes comedy, mystery, romance and adventure. Set in the 1920s, “Evil Doings in Queen Toot’s Tomb” follows Professor Artie Facts and his archaeological expedition that uncovers an Egyptian tomb. The discovery leads to a series of humorous adventures as the professor’s heroic niece, Sue Hara, races to stay one step ahead of the villainous Allura and her sidekick, Ben-Dare Dundat. The production is co-directed by Carol Braden and Lisha Nurmela.
Unlike a traditional stage production, the melodrama invites audience participation through popcorn throwing, booing the villains and cheering the heroes.
