Jay Ewing was raised in Azle and graduated from Azle High School in 1978. During his time in high school, he participated in FFA, served as president of the organization his senior year and played baseball.
After graduating high school, he attended the University of Texas at Austin and earned a degree in petroleum engineering.
He went to work for Mitchell Energy Corp., which was acquired by Devon Energy 2002. That change brought him to Wise County and closer to his hometown. He retired from Devon Energy in 2018 after more than 36 years with the company.
