Turning 18 was the icing on the cake for Alexia Alonso when she came home with the birthday surprise of a lifetime: a third-place finish at a national baking and pastry competition.
Alonso, who graduated from Azle High School in May, left for Washington, D.C. on her birthday — July 5 — to compete in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s National Leadership Conference — and came back as a top-three national finalist July 11.
FCCLA culinary advisor Samantha Baker told The Azle News Alonso placed third at both regional and state competitions before advancing to nationals, where she competed against 149 students — and made history in the process.
