It’s estimated that more than 60,000 years ago, the first musical instrument was made by neanderthals — a ‘Divje Babe’ flute made from a cave bear’s thigh bone with holes carved into the top. The oldest surviving choral repertory dates to the second century B.C. in Ancient Greece where hymns were sung for Greek dramas and satyr plays.

Fast forward to today. The earliest forms of choir and musical instruments now have a permanent spot in our schools to give students a creative outlet and to increase their musical theory knowledge.

But which subject has more benefits for students? In this edition of “Double Take,” the choir position will be argued by Jolee Skinner and the band position will be represented by Cynthia Garcia.
