On Wednesday, Aug. 12, Azle Junior High opened its doors to about 900 students — welcoming them not only to a new school year, but to the grand opening of the Azle Independent School District’s newest campus.

Parts of the former AJH building — which was constructed in 1953 — were torn down earlier this summer, while the original gymnasiums were preserved and incorporated into the new facility.

The project was approved by voters in Azle ISD’s November 2023 bond election as part of a districtwide plan to reconfigure grade levels across all elementary and junior high campuses. The plan, according to Superintendent Todd Smith, was designed to ensure every student receives the same learning experience, no matter which campus they attend.
