Excitement — and maybe a little trepidation — filled the air Wednesday, Aug. 12 when approximately 7,200 students across all 12 Azle Independent School District campuses returned to the classroom for the first day of the 2026-27 school year.
As parents walked their little ones to their classrooms and seniors stepped onto the Azle High School campus for their last first day as Hornets, students across Azle ISD embraced a new school year — and for many, a new campus.
This year marks the first implementation of the district’s campus realignment, which was made possible through projects approved as part of Azle ISD’s 2023 bond program. The reconfiguration expanded all elementary campuses to serve prekindergarten through fifth grade and shifted junior high schools to include sixth through eighth grades.
While many students were already expected to attend a new school because of the realignment, attendance zone changes approved last December meant even more students started the year at a different campus.
Despite the adjustments, the familiar sights and sounds of the first day remained the same, as classmates reunited, teachers greeted students at classroom doors and families snapped hundreds of photos to commemorate the special day.
Whether attending a new campus or returning to a familiar one, students were welcomed with smiles, encouragement and the promise of a fresh start.
With the first day now in the books, students, teachers and parents can look forward to a new school year filled with opportunities, achievements and plenty of Hornet pride — no matter which campus they call home.
