Originally from East Texas, Mooney grew up on a farm with two sisters. She sang in a church choir and credits her grandfather with influencing her love of music.

“He would work all day long, and when it was time to quit (he would start toward) to the house, leading his old mule and singing at the top of his voice,” Mooney said.

She graduated Bridgeport High School in 1959 and attended what is now the University of North Texas for two years. Mooney said although she didn’t graduate, her time at the university taught her skills that later helped her open a business.
