Worn-out flags deserve much more than to be tossed out with yesterday’s garbage — and that’s exactly why Troop 243 Scout Corbin Mayo chose an American flag retirement box for his Eagle Scout project.
According to Troop 243 committee chairman Daniel Mayo, Corbin’s father, one of the requirements to earn the rank of Eagle Scout is to “plan, develop and lead a service project that benefits the community.” Since the city of Pelican Bay didn’t already have a flag retirement box available to residents, Daniel Mayo said his son saw an opportunity to fulfill his project requirement while also benefiting the Pelican Bay community.
“The American flag is a symbol of our country and deserves to be retired with honor,” Daniel Mayo said. “Corbin felt it was necessary to give the community a dedicated place to have their flags properly retired.”
