In September 1972, President Richard Nixon signed Proclamation 4157 recognizing the dedication of coaches at all levels. That proclamation helped establish National Coaches Day, now observed each year Oct. 6.

To recognize the day locally, The Azle News visited with Amy Estes, a 1989 Azle High School graduate who returned home and has spent much of her career working with young athletes in the community that once supported her.

Estes is the head swim coach at Azle High School and an assistant track coach who works with shot put and discus athletes. She is also a special education teacher who provides co-teaching support in English I and II.
