Hilltop Elementary School is taking a slow and steady approach toward improving student achievement as the campus works to overcome last year’s D accountability rating.

During the Azle Independent School District board of trustees meeting Oct. 19, Hilltop Principal Amanda House presented the campus’ Local Improvement Plan, which identifies underperforming groups and implements improvement strategies to ensure all students succeed.

House — who became principal of Hilltop in March — explained that taking over leadership of a campus that’s carrying an overall D rating can feel both daunting and humbling. However, House said even though an AI system essentially laughed at staff when they asked how they could turn a D rating into an A in a single year, she believes Hilltop can make the grade through gradual improvements and determination.
