Azle High School UIL Academics and Speech & Debate Teams competed at a March 29 district meet in Granbury, where seven students scored high enough to advance to regionals.
Of note, the journalism team brought home a firstplace finish for the second year in a row. Among the many spectacular show outs was junior Lily Hudman who earned first place in editorial writing, third in copy editing and fourth in news writing. She said the wins were the culmination of months of hard work and collaboration. Preparations for this UIL event begin in August. Each contest is different, requiring different rules, skills and standards. This year, the journalism team has competed in two UIL events so far and two invitationals.
“Every Tuesday, we meet after school,” Hudman said in an interview with The Azle News. “We basically just get practice. We’ll take prompts from last year’s state meet or ones we haven’t done yet and just use those in practice … our advisor would grade them as if he was a grader for a competition.”
