During the last weekend in April, Azle High School UIL academic teams competed at the regional contest at Texas Tech in Lubbock. The journalism team prevailed, winning first place in the competition and advancing to state. Annika Birkeland placed first in editorial writing, Lily Hudman placed second in editorial writing and fifth in copy editing and Luke Petersen placed second in copy editing. The three students will be moving forward to compete at the May 19 state contest in Austin.
Hudman, a junior, has steadily risen through the UIL ranks, placing fourth at regionals her freshman year and earning third place at the state level last year. Despite the pressure to maintain that success, she views the competition as a valuable preparation for a future career in journalism.
