Lettuce Shack prepares lunch for community

Lettuce Shack prepares lunch for community
Special Events Coordinator Amanda Scott speaks to the council on her birthday during a June meeting.

In its second year of operations, the FeedLot food truck park and Azle Farmers Market on Church Street are seeing some big changes. One of the most visually striking to date is the addition of a large painted shipping container. The precious cargo? Up to 1,000 heads of lettuce per week.

Nonprofit Community Link has organized the biweekly farmers market for a year and in January it approached the Azle City Council with an interesting proposal. In order to introduce more fresh produce to the market, Community Link planned on introducing a customized hydroponic vertical farm to the FeedLot grounds tucked inside a shipping container. The nonprofit was responsible for procuring all the project’s funding while the city will provide water and electricity.

The hydroponic freight farm was jokingly dubbed “The Lettuce Shack” by Public Work Director Rick White and the name stuck — becoming a permanent painted addition to the container’s façade.
