Council seeks grant to plan for more walkable Azle
Assistant City Manager Amber Beard introduces Monica Powell to speak to the city council about a grant to develop a plan to improve downtown Azle’s walkability and bike-ability. ZACH FREEMAN | THE AZLE NEWS

The beginnings of the beginnings of a plan are underway to make Main Street Azle a walker’s and biker’s paradise.

The Azle City Council unanimously approved a resolution to apply for a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation’s Alternatives Set-Aside Program. If awarded, the grant will cover 80% of the cost of developing an active transportation plan for the city of Azle. The project would aim at improving walking and biking conditions throughout the city, with a focus on the downtown area. This aligns closely with the city’s recently completed comprehensive master plan for the next 20 years. Currently, Azle does not have sidewalks or walking trails in and around the Main Street area. The city hopes to change this in the coming years.

The city has contracted engineering and design firm Kimley-Horn to prepare the documents required to apply for the grant. Transportation planner Monica Powell from Kimley-Horn was present at the June 3 council meeting to answer the council’s questions.
