Reno considers municipal fire department, citizens respond

Since before the May 3 election when Reno citizens voted against disincorporation of the city, the Reno City Council has discus. sed the possibility of creating a municipal fire department. During a June 9 Reno City Council meeting, the topic arose again. The agenda item included provisions for appointing a fire chief, authorizing the mayor to execute such agreements, requiring compliance with state law, providing for severability and providing an effective date.

The agenda item was originally introduced to be discussed in executive session during an April 28 city council meeting but has been tabled since then. Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Ed Braun brought the agenda item back for the June 9 regular meeting after it was “inadvertently killed” last month according to Braun.

“The municipal fire department, I think has merit,” Braun said. “I reached out to people to get their opinions and advice. As an elected representative, that’s what I want. I want input from the citizens — good or bad.”
