UIL approves wearable tech for football play calling

Coaches weigh in on new one-way communication devices for 2025 season

A major shift is coming to Texas high school football in 2025 as the University Interscholastic League has approved the use of wearable technology for coach-to-player communication during games. The new rule allows for one-way devices like smartwatches and digital wristbands to be worn by players on the field to receive play calls from coaches.

While the National Collegiate Athletic Association uses in-helmet communication systems for quarterbacks and defensive leaders, the UIL opted for less invasive wearable tech, aiming to improve efficiency while maintaining competitive integrity. There will be no limit to how many players can wear the devices during a game, but coaches must use them from the press box or coaching booth. Sideline use of tablets and other electronic devices remains restricted.
