Hornet Plaza on Boyd Road is one of Azle’s newest strip malls. This summer it’ll see the opening of some of its first businesses.
Construction started on the property in the summer of 2022. In the time that followed many rumors swirled about what businesses may come to Azle. Two early candidates — Hornets Café and a Shell convenience store — registered with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation but ultimately pulled out in 2024 and 2023, respectively.
Now, construction has begun at the completed site at 1000 Boyd Road to prepare one of its suites to serve up sweet treats galore and more. Sugar Llamas started work in March to bring the suite on the strip’s left corner online and ready for customers. In recent years, this chain has spread rapidly from Tulsa, Oklahoma to the rest of the United States. The business specializes in coffee, ice cream, donuts and other sugary confections. The $350,000 renovation will transform the 1,350 square foot shell into Hornet Plaza’s first functional business. The project is expected to be complete by mid-August.
