Animal control supervisor addresses need for expansion of shelter
Animal Control Supervisor Jessie Williams says the shelter’s dog intake kennels are not up to par with current best practices. ZACH FREEMAN | THE AZLE NEWS

The city of Azle is looking at high priority projects in need of improvement. One of the items that sits near the top of the list — and in people’s hearts — is the Azle Animal Shelter.

The shelter was built in the 1980s and expanded with a new building in 2011. Today, with Azle’s growing population of people and pets — the facility is in need of another expansion. The original shelter currently serves as an intake building while the newer structure hosts adoptable animals, a reception area and a meeting area to introduce lucky dogs and cats to their new owners. Intake is where animals are held when they first arrive at the shelter.

There they are monitored and quarantined to weed out any illnesses and get them situated before they are put up for adoption. Along with holding the shelter’s newest residents, animal control officers have also turned the spot into a makeshift office and storage space.
