Last month, local kids were mystified, amazed and informed during a special demonstration at Azle Memorial Library. Texas A&M University instructional associate chemistry professor Jim Pennington took science on the road, visiting Azle June 12.

Pennington froze, smashed, burned, solidified and sublimated his way through two hours’ worth of visually stunning experiments. The library was a full house after dozens of families turned out to view the event. At the end of his demonstration, local kids got to play with some of the end products from the show.

“A lot of things we do wouldn’t be safe for them to do, but it’s neat for them to get to see it,” Pennington said. “People have said before, you know, why not just put it online. It’s not the same as being in the same room when something blows up, or when you see the colors change and can feel the heat.
