S’mores anyone? Bonfire blazes on Pecan Street

The smell of a raging campfire overpowered the usual scent of good eats in the 1000 block of Boyd Road last Wednesday. Drivers were met with an unusual sight around 3 p.m. July 30 as a bonfire crackled in the middle of Pecan Street.

Azle Fire Marshal Melvin Wilson said the burning was a spontaneous combustion of unknown origin. Two men were clearing trees from a property in Pelican Bay and took their haul on the road.

Their trailer full of dead and dry limbs, logs and brush burst into flames as they pulled into the Burger King parking lot — presumably for a couple flame grilled Whoppers — at the intersection of Boyd Road and Pecan Street. Fortunately, the pair was able to unhitch their truck from the trailer and there were no reported injuries.
