Citizens converge on City Hall to speak against proposed tax rate, animal shelter
Three times in a single week, Azle residents filled council chambers to make their voices heard. The Azle City Council heard them loud and clear.
At issue was a proposed tax rate of $0.6779927 — about 67.8 cents — per $100 of property valuation. That rate represents an increase of $0.0639058 or about 6.4 cents from the city’s current tax rate of $0.6140869. Of the proposed rate, $0.0106057, or about 1 cent, would have been added to the current maintenance and operations tax rate to fund the city’s 2025-26 proposed budget; about 5.3 cents, the remainder of the increase, was designated to enable $20 million debt issuance to expand/renovate the city’s animal shelter and to replace the existing equipment maintenance facility.
