A spirited first quarter wasn’t enough for the Azle Hornets, as they dropped their fourth straight game of the season, falling to the Brewer Bears 63-42 Friday night in a high-scoring district clash at Hornet Field.
The Hornets (0-4, 0-2 in district) showed flashes of brilliance, particularly on offense, but costly turnovers ultimately doomed them to defeat. Azle turned the ball over five times — two fumbles and three interceptions — as the Bears capitalized on every miscue to seal the win.
Quarterback Derrek Vowell threw four touchdown passes in the loss, including a dazzling 73-yard strike to Brayden Combs to tie the game at 7 in the first quarter. But Vowell’s three interceptions proved costly, while Combs’ big night — 102 yards receiving and two touchdowns — was overshadowed by the team's inability to hold on to the ball.
