Azle Independent School District has released a written statement related to a recent lawsuit that was filed against the district for complying with Texas Senate Bill 10 — the law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms.
According to the statement publicly released by Superintendent Todd Smith on social media late Wednesday, Oct. 1, families from 15 Texas school districts — Azle ISD included — filed a federal lawsuit challenging the new requirement. SB 10, which was passed in the recent 89th legislative session, mandates that every public-school classroom must display a 16-by-20-inch poster or framed copy of the Ten Commandments.
While the lawsuit is still ongoing, Smith said the district is limited in what it can share publicly. However, he said he still wanted to give an update and let the public know the district is complying with the law and will continue to do so until further notice.
