Fourth graders at Hilltop Elementary School and Cross Timbers Elementary have a successful year in store — and it’s all thanks to a program called Academy 4.
This leadership mentoring program — which was launched last year at the two campuses — provides a one-on-one mentor to every fourth-grade student. As mentors, these volunteers spend 90 minutes per month with their students, working to build positive relationships and making a real difference in their lives.
While Academy 4 Executive Director John Shearer said he had his doubts about the success of the program in a small town like Azle, he was encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by Superintendent Todd Smith.
